Why Lighting is EVERYTHING When Choosing Your Wedding Videographer

So you’re getting married, and you’re ready to hire your videographer to capture the day – congrats! Want to know what sets a GOOD wedding videographer apart from a GREAT wedding videographer?

It’s simple – lighting!

Why Lighting Matters When Choosing Your Wedding Videographer

How a videographer chooses to light (or not light!) the various aspects of your wedding day will impact the final result – your video – quite dramatically.

With that in mind, here are 4 things to keep in mind when considering which Louisville, KY videographer to hire for your wedding:

1. Consider the ceremony location

The ceremony is the most important part of your wedding day, when you think about it – and it’s the part you definitely want captured beautifully and cleanly! You can’t redo the ceremony, so you want to hire a videographer who knows what they’re doing and can adequately light even the darkest of venues without distracting from the main event.

If your ceremony space is especially dark, ask your videographer if they’ve ever shot there before or what their plan is for lighting the space. Some cameras are better than others at capturing low-light images and video, so it’s worth asking them about their gear and hearing what they have to say.

At the very least, ask to see videos they’ve taken in other low-light locations to get a sense of what your final video will look like.

2. Natural Light vs. Flash or Artificial Lighting

Unless your getting ready location, ceremony, reception, and dance are all indoors in the same windowless room, your videographer is going to have to use various lighting setups to capture your day. Ideally, you want to hire a videographer who can capture seamless, well-lighted footage that is consistent throughout your film and not distracting to the story of your wedding day.

When interviewing your videographer, ask if they prefer natural or artificial light. There isn’t necessarily a right answer – just ask what they prefer and get a sense for how comfortable they are in each situation. Videographers who prefer natural light may struggle in dark ballrooms, while someone who is skilled with flash or artificial lighting techniques might not be comfortable filming a windy ceremony happening at high noon on a sunny day.

3. Think about the kind of reception you are having and how you want it captured.

Like the ceremony, the reception is a very important part of your wedding day and is usually where the videographer will capture your guests interacting with you, dancing, or even saying a few words about you as a couple.

If you’re having an outdoor reception, ask your videographer how they will transition as the sun sets. If you’re planning an indoor reception, find out how they will light the space and ask if that will interfere with the photographer (another important factor!).

Finally, what kind of reception footage do you hope to get? Are you looking for soft, dreamy, elegant lighting or are you planning an open bar with a rowdy crowd and lots of laughs? The way a videographer lights and captures these various settings sets the mood for your film – so be sure to ask lots of questions about their style!

4. Ask yourself this: why are you hiring a videographer in the first place?

Finally, ask yourself why you want a wedding video in the first place. If you’re making room for a videographer in your budget, why not hire the best? I’m always so sad when I speak with couples who were disappointed with their wedding videographer – those are moments they won’t get back!

If wedding videography is important to you, my advice is this: Invest in the best.

Do your research, find someone whose personality clicks with yours and who understands their camera and their lighting gear perfectly. A wedding is a once in a lifetime experience and the only thing you keep from the day are your photos and videos, so it’s worth stretching your budget in those areas so that you get a video you’re truly satisfied with!
